Gap-fill Methods for Estimating Fatigue Damage
نویسنده
چکیده
The fatigue damage calculated for an aircraft by the Individual Aircraft Tracking (IAT) programs is dependent on the quality of input data. When the input data quality is poor or invalid, aircraft operators resort to gap-filling techniques to account for missing or invalid data. Invariably, conservative estimates of fatigue damage are obtained by imposing severe penalties for invalid or missing data, which leads to early retirement of aircraft when there is a large amount of gap-fill. In an environment where there is a demand to keep flying older aircraft, it becomes essential to assess the amount of gap-fill and the gap-fill technique used in the Individual Aircraft Tracking (IAT) programs to estimate fatigue damage for invalid or missing data. This paper first addresses common problems with the aircraft data and its causes. The paper then examines usage and damage based gap-fill techniques that are used in IAT programs with a focus on fatigue damage assessment and then provides relative merits of gap-fill techniques. The paper proposes a modified damage gap-fill method based on mitigating the fleet-wide risk. The application of the proposed gap-fill method is then illustrated for a hypothetical fleet of aircraft.

The present paper studies the effect of creating a fillet on fretting fatigue strength of an axle, using different multiaxial fatigue criteria and fretting fatigue damage parameter. Finite element method is applied to obtain stress and strain in the axle and the results obtained from modeling are compared with the experimental test data available in literature. The results show that fretting fa...

The Objet PolyJet 3D Printing process provides the ability to print graded materials featuring both stiff and elastomeric polymers. This capability allows for a variety of new design possibilities for additive manufacturing such as living hinges, shock absorbing casings, and integrated gaskets. Such design features typically rely upon the ability of traditional elastomers to experience large an...

Considering the stress cycles in the joints and members due to wave induced forces on offshore platforms, fatigue analysis is therefore one of the most important analyses in the offshore platforms design. Although most of the steel jacket type platforms are designed and located in areas with relatively high ratios of operational sea-states, for maximum environmental events, would have acceptabl...

In this article, the isothermal low-cycle fatigue continuum damage in the engine piston aluminum alloy has been evaluated at different temperatures. For this objective, experimental data of low-cycle fatigue tests on standard specimens were used at 280, 350 and 425°C. Based on the continuum damage mechanics method, the fatigue damage was calculated during cyclic loading. Obtained results, inclu...
متن کاملMonitoring VIV fatigue damage on marine risers
Long flexible cylinders (e.g. risers, tendons, mooring lines) exposed to the marine environment encounter ocean currents leading to vortex-induced vibration (VIV). These oscillations, often driven at high frequencies over extended periods of time may result in structural failure of the member due to fatigue damage accumulation. Recent developments in instrumentation and installation of data acq...
